Governor Parnell Names Response Coordinator

for Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault

June 28, 2010, Juneau, Alaska Ė Reaffirming his commitment to end domestic violence and sexual assault within 10 years, Governor Sean Parnell today appointed Katie TePas to be the stateís first domestic violence and sexual assault response coordinator. The Legislature created the position in the governorís office and it is part of Governor Parnellís comprehensive initiative against sexual assault and domestic violence.

ďKatie has a true heart for Alaskans and is dedicated to helping end the epidemic of domestic violence and sexual assault in our state,Ē Governor Parnell said.

TePas, of Anchorage, is a program coordinator for the Alaska State Troopers, where she manages statewide programs and services specific to domestic violence, sexual assault, child sexual abuse and stalking. Her work includes research and study of domestic violence and sexual assault in Alaska with the University of Alaska, Anchorage. TePas also administered violence against women grants for law enforcement and developed domestic violence and sexual assault training programs for law enforcement agencies. TePas has served as interim executive director for the Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.

TePas received a bachelorís of science in social work from Xavier University and a masterís of arts in social service administration from the University of Chicago. She is a certified small town and rural domestic violence training instructor, sexual assault investigator trainer and a police instructor. She was named civilian of the year in 2003 by the division of Alaska State Troopers and received the Governorís Denali Peak Award for Leadership in 2008.

TePasí new role is to provide direction to all relevant executive branch agencies and to collaborate with municipal, federal, tribal and non-profit entities, with the goals of reducing the rates of sexual assault and domestic violence, ensuring adequate services for victims, and raising public awareness of the epidemic and the responses to it.
